THE QUIKENING

THE QUIKENING

The Quikening project is Tymon Dogg's latest musical venture. The Quikening 'band' is an ever-expanding collective of musicians which has so far consisted of: Tymon (Vocals, Violin, Spanish Guitar, Pyramid Harp), Simon Shaw (Guitars), Jo Brooks (Keyboards), Sacha Trochet (Drums, Percussion), Muz McHattie (Bass), Sarah Anderson (Violin), Alex Thomas (Percussion), Jasper (surname yet unknown - Drums) and Simon (surname yet unknown - Drums). The group's music is a mix of acoustic, rock, folk, roots, and Latin influences. At recent gigs Tymon has also introduced a new musical instrument that he designed back in 1984 called, "The New World Harp" or "Pyramid Harp". On March 23rd 2006, The Quikening played their debut gig at the SPITZ club in London, England. Check the "LIVE SHOWS" page for details about the band's recent shows. MAPMUSIC have also officially released Tymon Dogg's new EP, Guantanamo, on CD and limited edition vinyl (now sold out). To purchase the CD, go to www.mapmusic.net/ - to listen to the three tracks featured on the EP, visit Tymon Dogg & The Quikening's myspace.com page at www.myspace.com/thequikening. A full-length album recorded by Tymon and various musicians from the ever-expanding Quikening collective has been mentioned for a possible release by Spring 2008. The Quikening's various members feature below:

Muz McHattie (Bass) Muz McHattie (Bass)

Since the September gig at The Zigfrid, an 18-year-old bass player from Hastings, East Sussex named Muz McHattie has joined the band. He started out in the popular London-based 'Punk n' Roll band', "The Heaters", while attending Brighton Institute of Modern Music. The Heaters toured and recorded an album on their own label "The Turner Prize" -  though unfortunately broke up due to personal problems within the band whilst a contract was being drafted with the folks at Parlophone. He currently works locally as a bass teacher. He has played in a local few jazz duo's and trio's, mainly the Dakota Jim band with secessionists: Liam Genockey, Jim Ydstie and James Evans. Of his recruitment for The Quikening, Muz says: "A couple of years back when I was in a previous band called The Heaters, Tymon came up to me after a show and we just talked for a bit, then in August this year (just before the gig in Zigfrid) he approached me and asked if I could make a rehearsal with him and the rest of the band in the next couple of days, and so that was that!" "Tymon himself is a great guy and a pleasure to know and play with. By far one of the most talented musicians I've met so far." Muz is also in a New Wave/Electro/Punk band called 'Sailor No Youth' - Muz can be contacted at: www.myspace.com/muztheheaters -Muz photo by Marion Hospal.

Jo Brooks (Keyboards) Jo Brooks (Keyboards)

Jo Brooks has been involved with The Quikening since the beginning of 2006 playing keyboards (but mainly organ) and some hand percussion. He has known Tymon for a couple of years previously, but this is his first musical involvement with him. He has played for many years with local bands as well as bigger projects. One of his first bands in the early 90's was The Dharmas. Since those early days, Jo has gone on to work with Jeff Beck, Blair MacKichan and Neil Hannon, among many other noted musicians. Jo says of The Quikening: "I always feel like the band has the best seats in the house when we gig - as we get to see/hear close up Tymon tearing it up! Playing with Tymon has been an enlightening and hugely enjoyable experience - from the aspect of his songwriting, his musicianship and performance."

Sacha Trochet (Drums) Sacha Trochet (Drums)

Sacha Trochet is the drummer for The Quikening. He is also the drummer in the Logan Wilson band, a band in which Quikening guitarist Simon Shaw is also a member. Sacha's love of drumming began when he was 8 years old. Picking up a pair of mums knitting needles and banging along to records with the help of his dad. At age 11, he sat at a real drum kit and has never looked back since. He under took lessons at school with Roger Betts (one of the country's leading military snare drum players). By the age 14, Sacha was a member of the LSSO (London schools symphony orchestra) and LYSB (London youth symphonic band) as well as being a member of just about every jazz, brass and rock band in the school! After leaving school he joined as many working bands as he could get in to, across just about every style imaginable, from Steel Band to Metal. Along the way, Sacha has worked with many established artists and bands (some of which are sadly no longer among us) including: James Blades, Evelyn Glennie, Buddy Greco, Frankie Vaughn, Larry Adler, Sol Ray, Pattie Boulaye, Holly Johnson, Hot Chocolate, Whitesnake and Level 42. He has also toured in both Europe and America. Today Sacha is currently living in Hastings, East Sussex dividing his time between the Logan Wilson Band, The Quikening, and teaching and recording commitments.

Simon Shaw (Guitar) Simon Shaw (Guitar)

Simon Shaw is currently playing guitar in both The Quikening and the Logan Wilson Band. He also teaches guitar. The following text was taken from an October 16, 2006 blog on Simon's myspace.com page at: www.myspace.com/raindogshawthing: "The Quikening have had a couple of gigs in London this year, both were FAB, Tymon is currently drawing up a new set of music, so I`m learning new songs one at a time in a fairly leisurely fashion, then more intense band practise a few days prior to the gigs. Tymon`s songwriting is legendary, he plays fiddle & sings like NO-ONE ELSE ON THIS PLANET, plays Spanish guitar like I`d like to in my dreams & plays an electric harp-type instrument, his own invention, which all combine to create a most beautiful, unique sound. My job is to play the chords, in a kinda supportive unobtrusive style, do the rhythm guitar thing without getting in the way too much, there are a lot of strings on Tymon`s collective instruments & my electric guitar is capable of making a hell of a racket when I choose, but the art for me is choosing not to let it do that until required. When we think of The Shadows we all think of Hank Marvin & his lovely lead playing, but without Bruce Welch there`d`ve been a huge hole in the sound, I feel this is partly my role in this line up until I get the nod from Tymon to step on my Tube Screamer and unleash some suitably tortured lead lines! On the last gig I played 1 guitar solo & thought that was exactly the right amount, I made the most of it & loved the rest of the gig just as much. Funny how after 20+ years of playing Lead Guitar in most of my bands, I`m now learning a new art entirely!! Check out this band on Myspace."

Sarah Anderson (Violin) Sarah Anderson (Violin)

25-year-old Sarah Anderson has been playing fiddle and viola with Tymon since a Klub Dada night at The Mad George Tavern last year. Sarah was performing a solo set, which Tymon magnificently jumped in on. Together that night, both Tymon and Sarah also accompanied John Cooper Clark on stage. At present Sarah is playing with a band called Chrome Hoof. She also has a violin/viola and Double bass act with bass player Phillip Moll called 'SazMoll'. Sarah has also played with such artists including: Ed Tudor-Pole (Tenpole Tudor), Rennie Pilgrim, Pop Levi, Snapant, Dibidim, Klein Design, Mongo Lounge, and Jenny Johns. Photo by Daniel Paul Wilton. Sarah can be contacted at: www.myspace.com/sarah_floss_anderson

Jasper (Drums)

Jasper was The Quikening’s drummer for the group's recent August 2nd and 3rd Big Green Gathering Festival shows. Jasper currently plays in a band with Quikening bassist Muz called ‘Sailor No Youth’ - www.myspace.com/godsmightythumb.

Alex Thomas (Percussion)

Alex Thomas provided additional percussion as part of The Quikening for the group's recent August 2nd and 3rd Big Green Gathering Festival shows. Apparently, Alex is an English drummer from Lutterworth, Leicestershire, who currently performs with Badly Drawn Boy. He has played in bands Bolt Thrower and Groop Dogdrill, and under the name Earl Shilton, he released the album Two Rooms (Full of Insects) in 2003.
